Our Leadership Structure
“
This is a true saying: if a man desires oversight, he aspires to a good work. He who becomes an overseer must be blameless, the husband of one wife, alert mentally, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, and apt at teaching; not given to much wine, not hasty to strike, not quarrelsome, but meek, not greedy of filthy lucre; one who rules well his own household, and keeps his children under submission, to bring them up with all purity. For if a man does not know how to rule well his own household, how shall he take care of the assembly of Elohim? He should not be a new talmid, lest he become proud and fall into the condemnation of HaSatan. Moreover, he must have a good report from outsiders, lest he fall into reproach, and the snares of HaSatan.
Likewise shamashim must be pure, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; but they must uphold the Sod HaEmunah with a pure conscience. Let these first be examined, and then let them serve, after they have been found blameless. Likewise their wives must be chaste, alert mentally, faithful in all things, and not slanderers. Let the shamashim be appointed from those who have one wife, ruling their children and their own households well. For those who serve well earn good recognition for themselves and grow bold in HaEmunah of Yeshua HaMashi’akh.
— I Timothy 3:1-13

At Congregation Bat-Tzion, we follow Yeshua’s instruction to call no man “Rabbi” except for Him. He is our Rabbi, Teacher, and Master. Therefore, we have no leadership titles here except for Shammash (Servant) or Elder. We are governed by a Beit Din [board of elders], who attest to the tenets of faith listed on this site and who have agreed together to support the congregation prayerfully and dutifully. New Beit Din members and elders are prayerfully appointed under the advisement of the acting Beit Din. We uphold the standards such as those in I Timothy when appointing new leaders. The Beit Din is currently comprised of the following:
- Keith and Ileana Mathenia
- Tim and Teresa Johnson
- Wil Roybal
We are a congregation of Shammashim who lovingly serve Messiah Yeshua by serving His Body. We have no paid staff at Bat-Tzion. Anything that needs to be done is accomplished due to the graciousness of volunteers. Therefore, we also have several appointed elders who carry out duties and oversee functions and many members who volunteer for the work. It is a joy to have such a Body of Believers who are motivated and energized by the Ruakh HaKodesh to do so.

And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Yeshua, in Mark 10:42-45
