Traditional Prayers

Prayer is not commanded in scripture. Nowhere does יהוה tell His people to pray, yet Abraham prayed in the morning, Isaac prayed in the day, and Jacob prayed at night. David, the author of many biblical prayers [T’hillim, or “Psalms”], echoed this sentiment in Psalm 55:18: “Evening, and morning, and afternoon do I pray and cry out, and He will hear my voice”

Daniel is seen praying these three times a day in Babylon [Daniel 6:11]. Ezra created the ‘liturgy’ of prayer that would be used in Synagogues throughout the ages, and the times of the prayers coincide with the times of the offerings that were made in the Temple according to Moshe’s instruction in Torah. This liturgy has changed only slightly over time. Bat-Tzion has endeavored to go back to the original prayer liturgy of Ezra as instituted in the Synagogues very early on, consisting predominantly of blessings from the Torah and prayers from the Psalms, with the additions of prayers that we read in Brit Khadasha.

All prayers are quoted from “Messianic Siddur for Shabbat”.

Blessing of Handwashing

HebrewTransliteration
Asher lo nasa lashaveh nafshi; velo nishba lemirmah.

The earth is יהוה ’s, with all that is in it, the world, and those who live there; for He set its foundations on the seas and established it on the rivers. Who may go up to the mountain of יהוה ? Who can stand in His Holy place? Those with clean hands and a pure heart, who do not make vanities the purpose of their lives, or swear oaths just to deceive. (Tehillah (Psalms) 24:1-4)

Ma Yakar

HebrewTransliteration
Yirveyun mideshen beiteikḥa, v’nakḥal adaneikḥa tashkem.Ki im’kḥa m’kor kḥayim, b’orkḥa nirei or.Meshokḥ khasdekḥa l’yodeikḥa, v’tzidkatekḥa lishrei lev.

How precious is Your lovingkindness, O Elohim! and the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings. They are abundantly satisfied with the plenty of Your house; and You make them drink of the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light do we see light. O continue Your lovingkindness unto them that know You; and Your righteousness to the upright in heart. (Tehillah (Psalms) 36:8-11)

Tehillah 100

Recognizing the transition into the sacred place, and approaching Him through thankfulness.

HebrewTransliteration
Ivdu et יהוה besimkḥah; bo’u l’fanav birnanah.De’u ki יהוה , hu Elohim. A Tehillah of thanksgiving. Shout unto יהוה , all the earth. Serve יהוה with gladness; come before His presence with singing. Know that יהוה is Elohim; It is He that made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people, and the flock of His pasture.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise; give thanks to Him, and bless His Name. For יהוה is good; His mercy endures forever, and His faithfulness throughout all generations. (Tehillah (Psalms) 100:1-5)

Justification – The Blood of Messiah

Recognizing the need of forgiveness and imparted innocence from יהוה, and our attainment of it through Messiah Yeshua’s shed blood.

HebrewTransliteration
Aval im ba’or mithal’kḥim Anu, k’mo sh’hu ba’or, yesh lanu shutafut zeh im zeh, v’dam Yeshua B’no m’taher Otanu mi’kol kḥata’einu. Aval im mitvadim Anu al kḥata’einu, ne’eman hu v’tzadik lislo’akḥ lanu et kḥata’einu, u’letaher Otanu mi’kol avlateinu.

The fear of יהוה is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all they that do thereafter; His praise endures forever. (Tehillim (Psalms) 111.:10) But He, being full of mercy, forgives iniquity, and destroys not; yes, often does He turn His anger away, and does not stir up all His wrath. (Tehillim (Psalms) 78:38) If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not follow the truth; but if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Yeshua, His Son, cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all our iniquity. (Yokhanan Alef (1st John) 1:6-9)

Attributes of Mercy

Known as the “Thirteen Attributes of Elohim,” declared when He put Moshe in the cleft of the Rock. Each of us is placed in the cleft of the rock, Messiah’s wounds.

Master of the Universe who has reigned before anything was created, at the time that everything was created at His will, then “King” was His Name proclaimed. After all has ceased to exist, He, the Awesome One, will reign alone. And He was and He is, and He shall be in Glory! And He is One, and there is no second to compare to Him, to declare as His equal. Without beginning, without end, He has the might and dominion. And He is my Elohim and my living Redeemer, and the Rock of my Salvation in time of trouble. And He is my standard and a refuge for me, the portion of my cup on the day I call. In His hand I will deposit my spirit, when I am asleep, and I shall awaken, and with my spirit shall my body remain. Adonai is with me and I shall not fear.

1 For the Leader; upon the Gitit. By Asaf.
2 Sing aloud unto Elohim our strength; shout unto the Elohim of Ya’akov.
3 Take up the melody, and sound the timbrel, the sweet Kinor with the Nevel.
4 Blast the shofar at the khodesh, at the full moon for our Khag.
5 For it is a statute for Yisra’el, an ordinance of the Elohim of Ya’akov.
6 He appointed it in Yosef for a testimony, when He went forth against the land of Mitzrayim. The speech of one that I knew not did I hear:
7 “I removed his shoulder from the burden; his hands were freed from the basket.
8 You did call in trouble, and I rescued you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I proved you at the waters of Merivah. Selah.
9 Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you: O Yisra’el, if you would hearken unto Me!
10 There shall no strange god be in you; neither shall you worship any foreign god.
11 I am יהוה your Elohim, who brought you up out of the land of Mitzrayim; open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
12 But My people hearkened not to My voice; and Yisra’el would not love Me.
13 So I let them go after the stubbornness of their heart, that they might walk in their own counsels.
14 Oh that My people would hearken unto Me, that Yisra’el would walk in My ways!
15 I would soon subdue their enemies, and turn My hand against their adversaries.
16 The haters of יהוה would dwindle away before Him; and their punishment would endure forever.
17 They would also be fed with the fat of wheat; and with honey out of the Rock would I satisfy you.”

1 A Mizmor, a Song. For Yom HaShabbat.
2 It is good to give thanks unto יהוה, and to sing praises unto Your Name, O Elyon;
3 To declare Your compassion in the morning, and Your faithfulness in the night seasons,
4 With an Asor, and with the Nevel; with a solemn sound upon the Kinor.
5 For You, יהוה , have made me glad through Your work; I will exult in the works of Your hands.
6 How great are Your works, O יהוה! Your thoughts are very deep.
7 A brutish man knows not, neither does a fool understand this.
8 When the wicked spring up as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they may be destroyed forever.
9 But You, O יהוה , are on high for evermore.
10 For, lo, Your enemies, O יהוה, for, lo, Your enemies shall perish: all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.
11 But my horn have You exalted like the horn of the wild ox; I am anointed with rich oil.
12 My eye also has gazed on them that lie in wait for me, my ears have heard my desire for the evil-doers that rise up against me.
13 A Tzadik shall flourish like the palm tree; he shall grow like a cedar in Levanon.
14 Planted in Beit יהוה, they shall flourish in the courts of our Elohim.
15 They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be full of sap and richness;
16 To declare that יהוה is upright, my Rock, in whom there is no unrighteousness.

Shema! The Greatest of Commandments

Barukḥ Shem K’vod, Malkḥuto, L’Olam Va’ed.Ve’ahavta, et יהוה Eloheikḥa, bekḥol levavekḥa uvkḥol nafshekḥa, uvkḥol me’odekḥa.

Hear, O Yisra’el: יהוה is our Elohim, יהוה is one. Blessed is the name of His Glorious Kingship forever and ever. And you are to love יהוה your Elohim with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. These words which I command you today are to be on your heart, and you are to teach them carefully to your children. You are to talk about them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall tie them to your hand and they are to be as frontlets between your eyes, and you shall write them on the door frames of your house and on your gates. And you shall love your neighbor as yourself.

TESHUVAH

The 40 Days of Teshuvah (“Return”) usually begin sometime in late summer and continue up to and including Yom HaKippurim [The Day of Atonements] in the fall. It is a time to return to יהוה through repentance for our sins. Sin against יהוה may be atoned for through confession and a request for forgiveness. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness through the blood of יהוה Yeshua HaMashi’akh who has cleansed our sins. [Yokhanan Alef (1st John) Chapter 1; Ivrim (Hebrews) Chapter 1]

Sin committed against another person should ideally be confessed to the person whom we have wronged when we can to put the wrong right and to ask for forgiveness. [Matti 5:23-24] If you feel someone has sinned against you, you should try to go to them personally to attempt to reconcile [Matti 18:15]. The person wronged is under no obligation to grant forgiveness, however, failure to do so after repeated requests is regarded as a sin in itself. Once one has confessed and requested forgiveness from יהוה we need to make a commitment to not repeat the confessed sin.
