10 D’varim

These 10 Mitzvot (commandments) are listed in Shemot (Exodus) chapter 20 and D’varim (Deuteronomy) chapter 5.

אָנֹכִי יהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר הוֹצֵאתִיךָ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם מִבֵּית עֲבָדִים .

Anokhi יהוה Elohei’kha, asher hotzetikha m’eretz Mitzrayim mi Beit Avadim

 “I am יהוה your Elohim, who brought you out of the land of Mitzrayim, out of the house of bondage.

– Shemot (Ex) 20:2a

לֹא יִהְיֶה לְךָ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים עַל פָּנָי גלֹא תַעֲשֶׂה לְךָ פֶסֶל וְכָל תְּמוּנָה אֲשֶׁר בַּשָּׁמַיִם מִמַּעַל וַאֲשֶׁר בָּאָרֶץ מִתָּחַת וַאֲשֶׁר בַּמַּיִם מִתַּחַת לָאָרֶץ. דלֹא תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה לָהֶם וְלֹא תָעָבְדֵם כִּי אָנֹכִי יהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֵל קַנָּא פֹּקֵד עֲו‍ֹן אָבֹת עַל בָּנִים עַל שִׁלֵּשִׁים וְעַל רִבֵּעִים לְשֹׂנְאָי. הוְעֹשֶׂה חֶסֶד לַאֲלָפִים לְאֹהֲבַי וּלְשֹׁמְרֵי מִצְו‍ֹתָי.

Lo yiyeh l’kha elohim akharim al panai. Lo ta’asei l’kha fesel, v’khol t’munah, asher ba’shamayim mima’al, va’asher ba’aretz mitakhat, va’asher bamayim, mitakhat la’aretz. Lo tishtakhavei lahem, v’lo ta’avdem. Ki Anokhi יהוה Eloheikha, El Kana; Po’ked avon avot al banim al sheleshim v’al r’ve’im l’sonai. V’aseh khesed la’alafim l’ohavai, ul’shomrei mitzvotai.

You shall have no other gods before Me.

You shall not make unto you a graven image, nor any manner of likeness, of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 4you shall not bow down unto them, nor serve them; for I, יהוה your Elohim, am El Kana, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me; 5and showing compassion unto the thousandth generation of them that love Me and keep My Mitzvot. (commandments).

לֹא תִשָּׂא אֶת שֵׁם יהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַשָּׁוְא כִּי לֹא יְנַקֶּה יהוה אֵת אֲשֶׁר יִשָּׂא אֶת שְׁמוֹ לַשָּׁוְא

Lo tisah et Shem יהוה Eloheikha la’shaveh; ki lo y’nakeh יהוה et asher yisah et sh’mo la’shaveh.

You shall not take the Name of  יהוה  your Elohim in vain; for  יהוה  will not hold him guiltless who takes His Name in vain.

זָכוֹר אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת לְקַדְּשׁוֹ. חשֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים תַּעֲבֹד וְעָשִׂיתָ כָּל מְלַאכְתֶּךָ. טוְיוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי שַׁבָּת לַיהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לֹא תַעֲשֶׂה כָל מְלָאכָה אַתָּה וּבִנְךָ וּבִתֶּךָ עַבְדְּךָ וַאֲמָתְךָ וּבְהֶמְתֶּךָ וְגֵרְךָ אֲשֶׁר בִּשְׁעָרֶיךָ. יכִּי שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים עָשָׂה יהוה אֶת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת הָאָרֶץ אֶת הַיָּם וְאֶת כָּל אֲשֶׁר בָּם וַיָּנַח בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי עַל כֵּן בֵּרַךְ יהוה אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת וַיְקַדְּשֵׁהוּ.

Zakhor et Yom HaShabbat, l’kadsho. Sheshet yamim ta’avod, v’asita kol m’lakhtekha. V’yom ha’shevi’i Shabbat la יהוה Eloheikha; lo ta’asei khol m’lakha, atah u’vinkha u’vitekha, avdekha va’amat’kha uv’hemteikha, v’ger’kha asher bish’areikha. Ki sheshet yamim asah יהוה et hashamayim v’et ha’aretz, et hayam v’et kol asher bam, vayanakh, bayom hashevi’i. Al ken b’rakh יהוה et yom haShabbat, vayekadshehu.

Remember Yom HaShabbat, to keep it kadosh. Six days shall you labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Shabbat unto יהוה your Elohim, in it you shall not do any manner of work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger that is within your gates; for in six days יהוה made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore יהוה blessed Yom HaShabbat, and hallowed it.

– Shemot (Ex) 20:7-10

Hebrew Transliteration

כַּבֵּד אֶת אָבִיךָ וְאֶת אִמֶּךָ לְמַעַן יַאֲרִכוּן יָמֶיךָ עַל הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר יהוה אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לָךְ.

Kabed et avikha v’et im’ekha, lema’an ya’arikhun yamekha al ha’adamah ahser יהוה Eloheikha noten lakh.

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which יהוה your Elohim gives you.

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

לֹא תַעֲנֶה בְרֵעֲךָ עֵד שָׁקֶר.

Lo ta’aneh b’re’akha ed shaker.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

– Shemot (Ex) 20:12

Hebrew Transliteration

לֹא תַחְמֹד בֵּית רֵעֶךָ לֹא תַחְמֹד אֵשֶׁת רֵעֶךָ וְעַבְדּוֹ וַאֲמָתוֹ וְשׁוֹרוֹ וַחֲמֹרוֹ וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר לְרֵעֶךָ.

Lo takhmod, beit re’ekha; lo takhmod eshet re’akha, v’avdoh, va’amatoh, v’shoro, vakhamoroh, v’khol asher l’re’ekha.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor any thing that is your neighbor’s.
